With just over five weeks until the June 19th Primary Election Day, I want to use each week to highlight a state we should be thinking about when we think DC statehood.
Week #1: Virginia.
Virginia is home to two Members of Congress we should be focusing on when we think about defending DC rights and pushing for statehood:
- Representative Tom Garrett (R, VA-05, which includes Charlottesville). Rep. Garrett is a freshman lawmaker who wants to void DC’s gun laws. He sponsored the House bill that, among other things, would allow guns in DC schools.
- Senator Mark Warner (D). Despite Virginia being a close neighbor of DC, and many DC residents (including myself) having lived in Virginia previously, Sen. Warner will not co-sponsor our DC statehood bill, and reportedly does not even like to be asked about DC statehood.
